Depression Therapy
Milford Counseling will help you and provide you with strategies that work for you.
Do You Feel Like You’re Just Not Yourself Lately?
Are you struggling with a loss of energy and motivation?
Have you been feeling hopeless about your life, as if nothing will ever work out for you?
Do you suffer from fear of failure and worry that you’ve let down the people you love and care about?
When you’re dealing with depression, it’s normal to find yourself in a constant state of disinterest and lethargy. Even the activities you normally enjoy may not appeal to you. You might spend most of your time sleeping, lying in bed, and isolating from the outside world. Yet the more you distance yourself from others, the easier it is to spiral down, lose perspective, and let depression maintain its grip on your life. For the first time, you may be asking yourself if it’s time to see a therapist who treats depression.
You May Not Even Realize That You’re Depressed
If you’ve lived with depression for a long time, you may become so used to feeling low that you don’t even notice it. Just as a fish has no concept of life outside of the water, you may have a tough time imagining that you could ever feel differently. Part of you may tell yourself: This is just the way I am and the way I’ll always be. Perhaps you’ve come to accept your negative thoughts as reality.
The good news is that another way of life is possible. Your negative thoughts do not define you, and with the right help and support, you can break free from the bondage of depression and live the life you’ve always dreamed of. At Milford Counseling, our therapists are here to help you overcome your depression symptoms and achieve a newfound peace of mind.
Depression Is One Of The Most Common Mental Health Issues In The World
Approximately one in four Americans suffer from depression at some point in their lifetime.* However, this is only the reported number—the actual number is probably far higher, since many cases of depression go unacknowledged. Millions of people are living with depression in silence. Some of them are too afraid to come forward about their struggles, while others aren’t even aware of the fact that they’re depressed.
The point is that you’re not alone. Coworkers, friends, family members, and other people you know may be suffering from depression, too. Depression rates have skyrocketed over the last twenty years. And those rates intensified under the weight of a global pandemic—we all became a little more on edge and got used to living with more stress on our plate.
Despite how common depression is nowadays, very few people in America get the help they need. In fact, you are already a step ahead of the game if you are reading this page.
Living With Depression Is Like Walking Through Thick Mud All Day Long
Depression makes you feel like you’re trudging through life while everyone else is gliding along effortlessly. You feel too heavy and weighed down to make progress, as if your feet are stuck in the mud. This makes it incredibly hard to work through depression on your own.
After all, depression is self-sabotaging by nature—it convinces you that there is nothing you can do to help yourself. This is why so many people resist getting treatment. They’ve rationalized their depression and come to believe that the future is hopeless no matter what they do.
A therapist can help you restore your sense of hope by providing a new way of looking at depression. They can help you step back, remove the foggy lens through which you’ve been viewing the world, and see a future of possibility instead of despair.
Our Holistic Approach To Therapy Can Help You Regain Power Over Your Depression
We believe that the first step in treating depression is understanding it. It is human nature to try and avoid pain, but just as a physical wound can’t heal if you ignore it, neither can an emotional wound. Therapy gives you a chance to confront, address, and get to the bottom of your depression in an environment that’s deeply safe and supportive. Your counselor will help you build goals and objectives that move you toward the remission of depression.
Our approach to the healing process is deeply holistic, addressing depression’s effects on your mental, emotional, physical, and social wellbeing. We aim to provide the most well-rounded treatment possible, ensuring that no area of your life goes unaddressed.
To that end, we often utilize medication as a supplement to the work of therapy. While medication is entirely optional—and in some cases, not even needed—our practice has a licensed medical director on staff who would be happy to provide pharmaceutical help throughout treatment.
Tailoring Your Depression Treatment Plan
Everyone is different and therapy with us is based on each client’s individual needs. We strongly believe that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment, and that’s why we draw from a wide range of healing methods.
To help clients work through the negative beliefs fueling their depression, we often use an approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Throughout most of our lives, we live like pinballs—bouncing around from one day to the next without stopping to reflect on our inner lives. The goal of CBT is to help you pause and take a closer look at how your thoughts and beliefs impact your emotions and behavior. This way, when negative thoughts arise, you’ll be able to question them and keep them from dictating your life.
Many of our therapists also utilize mindfulness-based treatment to help clients manage depression. Mindfulness is all about learning to slow down and maintain present-moment awareness. Think of mindfulness as the practice of observing and watching yourself—instead of living on autopilot and reacting instinctively to what’s going on around you, you’ll learn to respond to situations more thoughtfully and deliberately.
No matter what approach works best for you, Milford Counseling is confident that you can get your joy back and start feeling like yourself again. It might seem far-fetched right now, but by combining evidence-based techniques with compassionate, well-rounded care, we absolutely believe that we can help you regain power over your depression.
You May Have Some Concerns About Depression Therapy…
I tried therapy before and it didn’t work.
Not all treatment methods are equal and not every therapist-client relationship is a good match. The fact that you’re still looking for the right care is incredibly commendable. At Milford Counseling, we want to know what has and hasn’t worked for you in the past. This will allow us to create a treatment plan that’s specifically tailored to your needs and goals. You have probably learned a lot from your treatment experiences and this can help you find success in therapy.
Do you have a doctor that can help me with medication?
Milford Counseling’s medical director is an MD Psychiatrist who can help you with your mental health needs. What’s more, we have established many relationships with medical doctors and psychiatrists in the area. So even if one doctor isn’t the right fit, we’re confident that we can refer you to one who is.
What if I’m too busy to make time for depression therapy?
Paradoxically, people who invest time in therapy generally achieve more because they are eliminating the depression that has been holding them back. Have you ever heard the term “You get back what you put into it”? Well, this statement is especially true when it comes to managing depression. By being proactive about your mental health sooner rather than later, you can gain back the time you previously lost to struggling with depression.
